Teeth Whitening FAQ

IS TEETH SENSITIVITY NORMAL?
Yes. Teeth whitening is known to cause minor sensitivity during and after the procedure. The products used for whitening contain peroxide, which can dehydrate the tooth, causing sensitivity. When the tooth rehydrates, the sensitivity becomes less over time.

IS TEETH WHITENING SAFE?
Yes. Many people are under the mindset that teeth whitening is not safe, which is far from the truth. When done correctly, through a professional, teeth whitening is very safe.

ARE THERE WAYS TO MAKE MY RESULTS LAST LONGER?
There are a few things that patients can do to make their teeth whitening results last. Some of the best ways include the following:

  • Brush after every meal
  • Avoid heavily dyed beverages such as wine, tea or coffee
  • Maintain regular cleaning appointments with a dental hygienist

DOES TOOTH WHITENING AFFECT FILLINGS, VENEERS OR CROWNS?
Tooth whitening has no effect on restorative materials, such as porcelain, crowns or white (composite) fillings, but it may temporarily reduce the bond strength between enamel and composite restorations.

CAN I WHITEN WITH GUM DISEASE OR RECESSION?
We do not advise using any whitening product unless your gums are healthy and do not bleed, so they can withstand the whitening agent. Should you decide to whiten, you risk further complications.

IS THE AGENT USED IN TOOTH WHITENING TOXIC?
Products developed from carbamide peroxide, hydrogen peroxide and urea (substances found in every human cell) should be used cautiously to alleviate concern. Those who have issues are the ones who do not follow instructions and who overuse the products for months or years.

HOW MUCH WHITER WILL MY TEETH GET?
Your teeth will be up to three shades whiter from the initial shade when used per instructions. However, the degree of whiteness hinges on the hue you desire and the level of staining on your teeth. Even the mineral content of your teeth plays a role in determining the whitest possible shade.

HOW LONG WILL MY WHITENING LAST?
In most cases, the whitening lasts for four to six months. However, the results of teeth whitening hinge on your unique lifestyle, food consumption and commitment to oral care.
